Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race along with the Jones Engineering Dublin City Liffey Swim are rightly considered the two most prestigious swimming races on the Leinster Open Sea Calendar. Irish Sea Swimmers aim to win one of these major races in their Swimming career - for a Swimmer, winning the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race is akin to winning an All Ireland Final!

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race caters for swimmers as young as 14 years of age up to senior citizens. There are also two children’s races of 100m and 200m for children aged 13 and younger, held before the Men’s race.

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race is a handicapped race, meaning every Swimmer has a fair chance to compete. You do not have to be a former Olympian to win the Harbour Race!

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race is a 2.2km race around Dún Laoghaire Harbour. Competitors battle fellow swimmers, navigate around marker buoys, avoid obstacles and takie on the might that is the Irish Sea.

Details of this year's race are as follows:

  • The Childrens’ Race starts @ 16:15
  • The Mens’ Race starts @ 17:00
  • The Ladies’ Race starts @ 18:00

2018 will also see the introduction of an exciting NEW RACE COURSE!

This year's Dún Laoghaire Harbour race will start and finish in the spectacular grounds of the

Royal St. George Yacht Club.

The Men's and Ladies' races will have an identical course:

  • Start on the Royal St. George Yacht Club slipway;
  • Swim alongside the west side of the Carlisle Pier;
  • Turn toward the Grandstand on the East Pier;
  • Swim parallel to the East Pier to the Lighthouse;
  • Then, Swimmers race in a straight line across the Harbour directly into the finish on the Royal St. George Yacht Club slipway.

The presentation will take place in the Royal St. George Yacht Club, with refreshments and entertainment on site for the whole family.

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Race is different to most sea races as there is considerable interaction between the crowd and Swimmers. There is an opportunity for the crowd looking down from the East pier to clap and cheer on Swimmers as they swim out around the Harbour. This year spectators will also have a clear view of Swimmers approaching the finish within the breathtaking grounds of the Royal St. George Yacht Club. The only other swim which has the same interaction between swimmers and spectators is of course the Jones Engineering Dublin City Liffey Swim.
